'12 DOMESTIC GODS' PHOTOGRAPHIC PROJECT EXHIBITED AT PRIMO ALONSO GALLERY LONDON 07 AND 'CONNECTED ' AT SPILIOTI PROJECTS,ATHENS 2008

PHOTOGRAPHIC PROJECT BY CHRISTINA MITRENTSE
12 Colour Photographs 30x45cm each

‘12 DOMESTIC GODS’
In an incessant reference to metaphor, which defines the significance of natural occurrences within the everyday, Christina’s Mitrentse projects negotiate the deconstruction of our conceptual mechanisms. She has inhabited a space between knowledge and emotion, where the notion of interpretation is to be found at the same place within the institutionalized information the scientific field and the co-existence of aesthetics.
Within this context, the ‘12 DOMESTIC GODS’ is a photographic project, which deals with the representation of sculptures based on the12 Olympian Greek Gods. It juxtaposes parallels of ‘high art’, antiquity and the contemporary domestic life. This contextual transmission from the banal to the monumental is counter-balanced with the allegory of the imagery, in which the performative narratives function as reconstructions of the primary “narrations” of beauty.

'THE SECRET SCHOOL' LONDON 2005

The ‘secret school’ manifests itself as an interactive montage of artifacts derived from the Greek myth of the Secret School and debunks the credibility of historical discourses. The Greek artist Christina Mitrentse has responded to this myth by creating a solo project originally located as a site-specific installation, in a World War II bomb –shelter in London.
According to the Secret School narrative, during the Ottoman suppression, the Greek populace used to secretly organise small underground schools in an effort to sustain their education. These were convened in churches, monasteries or on other church grounds, usually at night. Mitrentse’s project awakens the emotional state and uncovers the atmosphere in which “homeless”, populations can find educational, cultural and spiritual shelter. It delivers a system that connects Education, Cultural regeneration, and Fiction and Political freedom. This collective space reveals the form of relational sites in contemporary society by describing the heterogenic relationship among them.
The manifestation contains drawings, sculptures, photography, installation, and sound which personalized within the laboratory of the everyday, inviting a debate between the scientific narrative and the museological approach”.
In an incessant reference to metaphor, which defines the significations of natural occurrences within everyday life, Mitrentse’s work proposes the deconstruction of our conceptual mechanisms. By re-contextualizing groups of objects and recreating imagery from books, Christina disrupts conventional readings, suggesting poetic ensembles ranging from the personal to the universal. The artist brings all the artifacts together in a nonhierarchical setting to question the process of observing, collecting, recording and displaying in terms of how data is circulated in a number of institutions such as school, library, church, academia, gallery and museum’.
The secret school acts as a metaphor for any contemporary social space, which has subversive counter cultural associations. It recommends a real heterotopy acting as an ‘esoteric’ space which has a fictional attribute while it becomes a carrier in which the questions of how we perceive knowledge can be communicated.

THE SECRET SCHOOL' at TERRA:EXTREMITAS,NDSM-AMSTERDAM 2008

About the Project:
"I am extremely pleased to collaborate with FoolishPeople for the Terra Meta Event at NDSM-werf of Amsterdam. Originally a solo project ‘The Secret School’ was located in a World War II bomb shelter in London, and will evolve within the dialect of The Fiction in 'Terra: Extremitas'. The installation will manifest itself as an interactive montage of artifacts derived from the Greek myth which debunks the credibility of historical discourses. It acts as an ‘esoteric’ space which has a fictional attribute and apocalyptic knowledge only for those who allow themselves to be rescued within it. 'The Secret School' will co-exist as the Last Church within the narrative."

"The Secret School is where the only essence left of faith fights for its survival in the last human hearts...The holy order of the Heavenly Pleroma has come to the BulkHead." John Harrigan director FoolishPeople

OCCUPY MY TIME is pleased to present: CUPBOARD LOVE 3.
Curated by Sue Cohen

CHRISTINA MITRENTSE AND JONAS RANSON IN A PUBLIC ART COMMISSION At THE GREENWICH FOOT TUNNEL. Cutty Sark - Island Gardens Station, Greenwich London.Opening Hours: Work presented in the lifts : 1 DECEMBER 2008-1 FEBRUARY 2009
Monday to Saturday 7.00am-7.00pm and Sunday 10.00am-5.30pm Works presented at the spiral staircases 24 hours.
Meet the artists on Saturday 6th of December 11.00am–14.00.
The artists present installations within the spiral staircases situated beneath the glazed domes at each side of the Edwardian Greenwich foot tunnel.3D Works are also installed in the hidden cupboards concealed within the lifts. In the tunnel we have no consciousness of the external; time becomes eternal, while the works installed form a link with the world of quasi-science and the investigations of nature, to that of commerce. The artists reflect upon the current artistic and economic reality to create their personal narrations as a means of inventive strategy for exploring the geography of the city. This takes pedestrians off their predictable paths and jolts them into an awareness of the urban landscape, its resonances and symbolism. The artworks extrapolate conflicting modes of environment to co-exist with a transcendent result. They present both sides of the river, both realities, both views. In Mitrentse’s poetical ’in favour of the real’ pictures, the meaningful objects appear to reveal the secret unseen side of things by creating visual allegories, leading the viewer into elliptic, enigmatic narratives. Christina refers to both nature as a cultural construction and to historical identity as policy of communication and propaganda. Ransons’s images explore a dark and fantastical Edwardian world, one which lay in opposition to the pre-conceived notions of gentility and high culture, propriety and social manners. Images coalesce in an allusion to invented cultural interpretations of good and evil which the city projects. It is in this unique space that the artists comment on the modern notions of cultural value and they invite the audience to engage with physical and emotional events re-evaluating the urban ‘regeneration’.

PRESS RELEASE
Gallery Primo Alonso proudly presents: RUN RABBIT RUN
Show from 7th to 30th September 2007 ,Gallery Primo Alonso, 395/397 Hackney Rd. London E2 8PP www.primoalonso.com
Run Rabbit, Run takes the work of eight international London based artists, and throws them together in Gallery Primo Alonso in order to explore our perceptions and expectations and create a dialogue. Painting, drawing, sculpture, video projection and installation will all be part of this show. Essentially these elements create a life size rabbit run that deals with the extrapolation and elevation of the day to day, as well as ideas of the parochial and the political. What started as a challenge to force the viewer to see and use the gallery's space differently, became a challenge to integrate work that is diverse in techniques and subject matter, while trying to establish a coherent dialogue throughout the exhibition as a whole. Artists:

Richard Cramp Christina Mitrentse
Harry Meadows Renata Fernandez
